Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was a French philosopher, sociologist and historian who taught and held the chair of the 'History of Systems of Thought' at the College de France. Foucault is most famous for his studey of social institutions, to be more specific, psychiatry, sexuality, and the prison system. He known to have developed the concept of power, meaning power in relation to knowledge and discourse. He is commonly associated with the post-structuralist school of thought as well as the post-Marxist. He, however, refused to identify himself as either. He referred to himself as disciple of the German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, and classified his philosophy as a critical history of modernity.
